Buying second-hand riding gear? Here's what to look for.
Second-hand gear can be an affordable option, especially if you're keen to stay safe without burning through your fuel budget. But not all pre-loved jackets and pants are worth the savings. Here's how to shop smart and make sure the gear still does its job when it counts.
1. Test the fit
Don’t just eyeball it, try it on. Wear the clothes you normally ride in underneath, and check the fit while you’re in your usual riding position. It should be snug, but not restrictive.
2. Check the impact protectors
Good armour is important - but only if the protectors stay in place. Make sure shoulder, elbow, knee and hip armour fits properly and doesn’t shift around. Consider upgrading and replacing impact protectors on any second hand purchase. You can read more about impact protectors here.
3. Look at seams and stitching
If the seams give out, so does your protection. Look for double or triple stitching and check for any splits or loose threads. Clean lines mean stronger gear.
4. Shop local, inspect in person
Places like Facebook Marketplace, eBay and Gumtree are great for scoring deals, but always try before you buy. Filter your search by location and arrange to check the gear in person. Photos won’t show frayed liners or dodgy zips!
